The old deal, only partially realized and now broken, promised each of us a sense of security.

We believed we would grow up in safe families, our basic social unit, and be a part of communities that together would be represented on the world stage, as part of a bigger family-- an international family of nation states.

Our own nation state would be our provider of welfare and security and with that came a common sense of belonging—of being part of something greater than ourselves—a community larger than our own.

We would go to school, learn from our elders, pass down knowledge, promote achievement and reward excellence.

The weakest members of our society would be provided for. The elderly would be included in society and shielded from pain and loneliness. They would age with dignity and be cared for until they passed away.

Children would be provided with a network of support. Our educational institutions would be the very best, fostering the full the measure of our children’s potential and creativity. They would provide the environment to excel. Parents would be given adequate maternity/paternity leave and community involvement would be integral to every child's well-being.

The ill would be taken care of, regardless of income or affliction.

The unemployed would be given financial assistance and the tools to find rewarding and meaningful employment.

The production and distribution of goods and services would be as equitable as possible and those who govern us would make sure the pursuit of wealth would not greatly disadvantage the weakest members of society nor harm the natural environment.

We would insist on our values and defend them if necessary. These include protection of the innocent and obligations on other sovereign states to comply with standards set by the international family. If national leaders harmed their own countrymen, or struck out at their neighbours, we would intervene and sanction force against them.

In countries that have less than we do, we would do all we can so that they can achieve the same quality of life that we know. In case of tragedy, we would provide medical aid, food and clothing. We would help build schools, water and agriculture systems as well as other infrastructure. We would spearhead global initiatives that would benefit the less fortunate and would improve the condition of humanity.

After witnessing the fall of communism and the suffering and stagnation it caused its people, we would uphold capitalism and the benefits it would bring. It would be our path to limitless opportunity and the means to tapping into our creative drive and realizing our full potential.
