Ben Hoffman is the founder and leader of The Canada Expedition. As a leading Canadian figure in conflict resolution and the founder of The Canadian International Institute of Applied Negotiation, Ben is a specialist in negotiation, mediation and peacebuilding. Ben has been involved in numerous peacebuilding projects internationally, working to prevent political violence and promote reconciliation.

Ben received a PhD from York University, UK, an M.A. in International Relations from Tufts University and a B.A. and M.A. in Psychology from Wilfrid Laurier University. In addition, Ben specialized in International Peacemaking at the Harvard Law School Program on Negotiation. Ben has founded several conflict resolution training programs and frequently lectures internationally on topics related to conflict.

Ben first envisioned The Canada Expedition in 2008 in response to mounting economic and environmental crises. As the project visionary and director, Ben is superbly qualified to guide us on our expedition to a new sustainable humanity.

Ken Hantman was president of a small business for 28 years, sold 5 years ago. Prior he had an academic background but declined two offers of honorary degrees in philosophy and psychology feeling that academia would be an insular path. An “uncanny simultaneity” of ideas in the subject of human consciousness and genius with those of Dr. Jonas Salk (famed for the killed-virus immunization of polio) led to Ken & Salk together determining the necessity of a practical application of their theories to provide guidance in a time of global transformation and rapidly evolving consciousness. In abeyance for a couple decades, he now pursues this, having input from some leading world thinkers. Ken and his wife Chris reside outside Philadelphia and in Canmore, Alberta.

Dustin Zielke is currently pursuing an Interdisciplinary M.A. in Cultural, Social, and Political Thought at the University of Victoria.  He holds a B.A. in Religious Studies from the University of British Columbia.  His work has largely focused on the intersection between belief/ideological systems and social identities such as race, gender and class.  This has increasingly led him to consider the role that ‘common sense’ plays in the public perception of social issues such as the environment and socio-economic change.  The relationship between thought and practice has been a guiding theme in his studies, as it informs his emphasis on social transformation.

Dustin is working with The Canada Expedition as an expedition guide. He hopes that he can help The Canada Expedition articulate a social ethic that is dedicated to thoughtful and sensitive activity in regards to our contemporary situation.

Evelyn Voight was born a German prisoner of war in what is now Zimbabwe. As a child in Africa, she alternated between running free on an isolated tea and coffee farm and submitting to Dickensian, British-style boarding schools. From these extremes emerged a fascination with unity in diversity -- most often explored through spoken soundscapes, fed by music -- and reflected in her choice of profession (a career in international development) and citizenship (Canadian). Penning for peace is her passion. Africa is her muse. She has performed in Canada and abroad.

Randy McCrae is a native of the Ottawa Valley, and although he has worked and lived in a variety of diverse locations in Ontario and in the United States, he is glad to be back in the Valley.

His career path has been as varied as the places he’s lived: Minister, Pastor, teacher, communications technician, salesman, contractor, waste manager, and public speaker.

Mr. McCrae’s interests are just as eclectic: he is an enthusiastic sailor, musician, singer, pilot, hunter, fisherman, wilderness camper, cabinet maker. He has three grown children. He lives with his wife, Sue, and their Great Dane, Hugo, on an island near Pembroke, Ontario.

Mr. McCrae has an overwhelming conviction that we cannot continue to go on with “business as usual”; that our present course as a nation, as a global community even, must be corrected if we are to maintain not just our way of life, but the ability of the planet to sustain humanity.
